Former Imo State governor, Chief Achike Udenwa has faulted the Nigerian electoral system.
Chief Udenwa, on a podcast with Edmund Obilo’s State Affairs, said it is worrisome that today, if anyone declares an interest to contest for political office, people no longer ask for the person’s antecedent, rather people are focus on how much the person is ready to spend.
According to him, election in Nigeria is about buying your way through. “Our election today is about buying, anybody with good amount of money can buy their way through even if people didn’t vote for them.”
Chief Udenwa who governed Imo State from 1999-2007, said our society has grown to the point where people should start asking those that wants to contest for political offices what are their antecedent, their characters and know exactly what they stand for.
He, however, added that it is heartbreaking that even if people did not vote for the person because of the person’s questionable characters, as long as the person has money, they can buy their way and be declared the winner.
