One of the officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, from Enugu’s zonal office has been shot dead in Awka, Anambra State.
The incident happened on Friday, 17th January, during a night raid at the suspect’s residence.

According to reports, the officers had stormed the suspect’s residence at 4:AM in the morning, trying to force their way in, when the suspect open fire, killing one officer at the spot and shot the second officer in the head.
The suspect was later arrested by the officers and taken into custody, where he was quoted to have said he thought the officers were thieves, reason he opened fire on them.
The news of the incident has taken over the Internet, as many alleged the man is an Internet fraudster, while others claimed they personally know the man as a legit businessman.
A blog based in Anambra State, Anambra social, in their official Facebook page wrote:
Suspected internet fraudsters fatally shot an EFCC officer and injured another during a raid in Anambra. The officers, from Enugu’s zonal office, were ambushed while pursuing suspected cybercriminals.
In a post shared on X formerly Twitter, an Anambra based social media influencer shared screenshots of a message he received regarding the incident. In the message someone claimed the suspect is his/her boss and he is a legit businessman.
The body of the message read:
“Good morning, i’v seen the news flying around about the EFCC even and the narrative is wrong, I have first hand information about the incident.”
“First the person involved is my boss and I can stand on it any day that he is not a fraudster or yahoo boy, we work together. The Gun is licensed and he shot because he thought they were robbers, everyone knows awk is not safe and this happened at the outskirts of ifite (not ifite).”
“The man involved had his family with him when this was happening and had to protect them. Stress on he is not a yahoo boy. I know his background, I know his father, I know his work.”
Meanwhile, the EFCC are yet to release an official statement on the incident, however, reports have it that the suspect’s gun is licensed, which he used as means of protection.
