An Abia-born cleric, Rev. Chika Ubani, has called on Governor Alex Otti of Abia State to fully implement free education in the state, noting that the free education program, originally launched by former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu between 1999 and 2007, has not been fully restored under the Otti administration.
Rev. Ubani highlighted that during Orji Uzor Kalu’s tenure, education was entirely free for all children, with free bus services provided for students by the administration.
“We need to return to that era when education was truly free for our children,” Rev. Ubani said. “Some of those who benefited are now adults and can testify to how impactful it was, with free buses, uniforms, and textbooks.
Governor Otti should revive that Orji Uzor Kalu era when civil servants were employed without discrimination. This is why many of us rank Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu alongside the likes of Lee Kuan Yew, Awolowo, and Ahmadu Bello. He was a truly detribalized leader who did not discriminate against anyone. Discrimination only emerged after he left office, as seen in the sacking of civil servants from outside Abia State.”
The cleric further urged Governor Otti to prioritize improvements in the state’s healthcare system, calling for the immediate revamping of the 15 general hospitals established by former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and improvements to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), both of which he claimed have suffered from neglect over the past 16 years.
Rev. Ubani also criticized the perceived lack of transparency in the Otti administration’s budget allocations and stressed the importance of transparency and prioritizing essential health services, particularly in rural areas.
“I remember using the facilities in ABSUTH when it was commissioned by then-Governor Orji Uzor Kalu; it was one of the best in the country at the time,” Rev. Ubani recalled.
“Your Excellency, now that you have restored the free education initiative started by former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, I urge you to also revamp ABSUTH and the 15 general hospitals built by him to ensure accessible medical care, especially in rural areas.”
Rev. Ubani expressed hope that renewed investment in education and healthcare would help Abia State once again achieve the standards set during Kalu’s administration, fostering better opportunities and a healthier future for its citizens.
