A Google spokesperson, Madison Cushman Veld, provided clarification on the decision, stating that the company reverted to displaying only public holidays and national observances.

“For over a decade, we’ve worked with timeanddate [dot] com to show public holidays and national observances in Google Calendar. Some years ago, the Calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments across a wide range of countries.”

However, Google stated that maintaining a vast number of global cultural moments manually became unsustainable. In mid-2024, the company transitioned back to only displaying public holidays and national observances while allowing users to manually add other important events to their calendars.
