EFCC Breaks Silence on Arrest of Martins ‘Very Dark Man’ Otse
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the recent arrest of Martins Innocent Otse, a social critics popular known as Very Dark Man (VDM), saying it followed due process and was based solely on credible petitions alleging financial crimes.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the anti-graft agency said Otse was invited on multiple occasions in connection with a series of grave allegations bordering on financial malfeasance.
However, the suspect reportedly failed to honour the invitations despite efforts to reach him through his known addresses and communication channels.
“The Commission received several petitions against Mr. Otse, and these pertain to serious financial offences which cannot be ignored. Despite several formal invitations, he refused to appear before investigators,” the EFCC stated.
The agency also addressed public concerns regarding Otse’s criticisms of the EFCC, clarifying that his arrest was not in retaliation for his public statements.
“The Commission is aware of various unguarded attacks made by the suspect against its operations. While such conduct is regrettable, his arrest was not motivated by those comments. Relevant law enforcement authorities may address those issues separately,” it added.
The EFCC confirmed that a valid remand order was obtained to keep Otse in custody, in line with legal procedures. He has since been offered administrative bail and will be released upon meeting the required conditions.
“The EFCC has a lawful right to detain suspects under investigation. Mr. Otse’s case is no different. Once he satisfies the bail conditions, he will be granted release,” the Commission said.
Expressing appreciation for public engagement, the EFCC urged Nigerians to remain objective and avoid speculative narratives about its work.
“We welcome the interest and reactions of Nigerians to our activities. However, baseless insinuations about our motives are unwarranted. The EFCC must be allowed to carry out its duties without fear or favour,” the statement concluded.
The Commission assured that charges will be filed against Otse upon the conclusion of investigations.
